A quarter of Britains dogs are suffering from depression because of the stress of being left alone while their owners are at work, a new study has found. Dogs whose owners work particularly long hours or are way from home for long periods display particularly visible signs of distress including pacing, spinning on the spot, howling, defecating and even self-harming.
Dr John Bradshaw explained if dogs are trained to interact with humans, they can then find it difficult when they dont have that interaction during the working day.
He explained: "Dogs have a very powerful link to humans. You can train a dog to do all sorts of things and understand our gestures.
A documentary on the subject will be shown on Channel 4 later this year.
